Blocked Toilet Repair Sydney

We clear blocked toilets in Sydney homes, offices and unit blocks. If the problem sits further down the line rather than in the pan, the camera finds it on the same call so you are not paying twice. Call any hour, or book online.

If the pan is the problem it is a short job. If the line past it is the problem, forcing the pan harder makes the mess worse.
Narrowing it down

Is it the toilet, or the line past it?

This is the question worth answering before you call, because it changes what the job is.

Just the toilet
  • Only the toilet is affected and everything else drains normally
  • The bowl fills and then drains away slowly on its own
  • It started suddenly, often right after something went in
  • Plunging makes a difference even if it does not fully clear it
The line past it
  • The shower or floor waste rises when the toilet is flushed
  • More than one fixture is slow or blocked at the same time
  • There is a sewage smell outside near the gully
  • Water appears at the overflow relief gully in the yard
What usually causes it

What actually blocks a toilet

Five causes cover almost all of them. The last two are the ones that bring the same toilet back again.

Wet wipes and products that do not break down

The single most common cause. Wipes sold as flushable do not disperse the way toilet paper does, so they stay intact and catch on anything rough in the pipe. Nappies, sanitary products and paper towel behave the same way.

Too much paper at once

Ordinary paper in ordinary amounts is fine. A large volume in a single flush can bridge in the trap before it has softened, particularly in older pans with a tighter bend.

Objects that fell in

Toys, toothbrushes, bottle caps, phones and cleaning blocks that have come loose. These rarely pass. They usually need retrieving rather than pushing through, which is why forcing it is the wrong first move.

Build-up in the pan trap

The S bend inside the pan narrows over years in hard water areas as scale and residue build on the surface. The toilet works for a long time and then starts blocking regularly with nothing obviously wrong.

A problem further along the branch line

Sometimes the toilet is just the lowest fixture and the real blockage is past it. Roots, grease and a damaged section all show up at the toilet first because it is where water appears when the line cannot take it.

While you wait

What not to try before we arrive

Each of these turns a routine job into a more expensive one, and all four are common.

Do not keep flushing

Each flush adds nine or so litres with nowhere to go. If the first flush did not clear it, the second one is what puts water over the rim and onto the floor.

Do not pour caustic drain cleaner in

It rarely shifts wipes or an object, it sits in the trap, and it makes the job hazardous for whoever puts their hands near it afterwards. It can also damage older pipework.

Do not force a tool into the pan

A wire coat hanger or similar will scratch the glaze, and it can crack the pan outright. A cracked pan turns a cheap job into a replacement.

Do not push a lost object further along

If something solid has gone in, driving it down the line moves the blockage somewhere harder to reach instead of removing it.

On the day

What we do about a blocked toilet

Work out which it is

One fixture or several. That single question decides whether this is a toilet job or a blocked sewer, and the two are different work at different prices.

Clear the pan or the branch

If the blockage is in the trap or just past it, it is cleared from the fixture. Objects are retrieved rather than driven further along.

Go further if it is not there

Where the pan is clear and the problem is past it, the branch line is cleared and the camera goes in to find out why it blocked rather than leaving that for next time.

Check it under flow

The toilet is run several times and watched, because a pan that empties once can still be partly obstructed.

Quick answers

Blocked toilet questions

Can I fix a blocked toilet myself?

Often, yes. A plunger that seals properly against the pan outlet shifts most soft blockages, and giving it time rather than force usually works better.

Stop if the water level is not dropping at all, if something solid has gone in, or if any other fixture is affected. Those three mean the problem is past the pan and pushing harder makes it worse.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

A toilet that blocks repeatedly is rarely about what is being flushed. The usual causes are build-up narrowing the pan trap or a problem further along the branch line.

A camera inspection is the quickest way to tell which, and it is worth doing after the second or third blockage rather than the sixth.

Is a blocked toilet an emergency?

It becomes one when it is the only toilet in the property, when water is going over the rim onto the floor, or when other fixtures are backing up at the same time.

Any of those should be treated as an emergency blocked drain. A second toilet in the house and a bowl that is draining slowly can wait for a normal booking.

Will you need to remove the toilet?

Usually not. Most blockages are cleared through the pan or from an access point on the branch line.

Where something solid is lodged in the trap and cannot be retrieved any other way, lifting the pan is sometimes the only way to get it out without breaking anything. You would be told the price for that before it happened.

Do you work on units with shared lines?

Yes. In unit blocks a blocked toilet is often the first sign of a problem on a line shared between several apartments, which is why identifying where the blockage actually sits matters more than usual. Strata work is covered under commercial and strata drain cleaning.
